Course description and goals

"Ti3SiC2 has negligible thermopower," declares a headline in Nature, one of the world's premier journals of scientific research. Since Nature's readers are scientists themselves, they will understand this. But a broader public might not. Something about the writing must change if a writer wishes to communicate with this broader public about scientific issues that concern us all. This course in science writing will not teach you how to write scientific research papers. Instead, we'll learn how to "translate" scientific and technical research for a non-specialist audience -- without either confusing your readers or making a travesty of science.

We will read and use as models scientific and technical writing in several genres: science coverage in newspapers and magazines, science books intended for general audiences, and critical essays on how research priorities are set. The class is writing-intensive. It will require three short exercises, three short essays, and a take-home final essay exam. You do not need to be a science major, but you must either possess or develop the research skills (and the determination) to pick up a science article on any subject and work at it until you can understand it.
